“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less” Marie Curie
In early 2022, my life took an unexpected turn when one morning, a 20k pregnancy test quickly bought at a pharmacy in Phu Quoc showed 2 lines. At that time, she had been nesting in me for 7 weeks, while I, partly busy with work and year-end trips, partly believed that the changes in my body were due to the previous Covid vaccine.
From that day on, in addition to the mixed emotions of joy, happiness, confusion, worry and even a feeling of bewilderment, I also began to receive billions of advice a day, from the person who gave birth, not giving birth, not giving birth and not knowing how to give birth. These “rumored” advices are mostly rooted in cultural and religious beliefs, but lack scientific accuracy or the studies are only comprehensive, ignoring important factors. individual characteristics and empathy in terms of human – women.
Remember when I was a student, my friends passed around clips of giving birth with the woman’s screams, the image of the doctor cutting open her perineum to let the baby come out, the blood and the hospital lights. ,… I blushed and asked if there was a way to give birth painlessly and with less horror? The group of friends linked arms, “What do you think about giving birth without pain? Stop having a cesarean section!” Asking adults, some people say “it’s a blessing from heaven, some people get sick, some don’t”… I mean, what about me, am I blessed or not?!?!?
Most societies expect women to come of age to carry out “their” calling – to give birth. Just count the number of questions women receive: when will they get married, when will they have children, how many children do they have, when will they have another baby… most of them return to the topic of maintaining the race. In Vietnam today, we will see a lot of books, newspapers and documents around raising children, but we do not see many documents about supporting women in giving birth. The books I found about pregnancy mostly provide comprehensive knowledge about the baby’s development journey in the womb and notes on what to do and what not to do at each time. However, I don’t see many documents that help women face their own changes:
- Pelvic changes: strengthen to support childbirth and recovery after labor. Pelvic pain is a silent pain that mothers endure for many years after giving birth, I rarely see it mentioned…
- Hormonal changes: how to take care of yourself during emotional waves?
- How to take care of this ever-changing body?
- What kind of exercise is suitable for pregnant women: how many sports can mothers experience?
- Are there other options for labor? A more complete choice for children and especially mothers? a painless, natural option with minimal intervention from drugs and medical procedures?
- After giving birth: defecation and urination, recovery of the body…
Even though I am a health coach, I am equipped with the knowledge to support clients and take care of themselves during times of transition like this, amidst the storm of hormonal and body changes and pressure. of my new vocation, I had moments of extreme confusion. There are times when my emotions overwhelm my reason and logic, causing me to panic and even doubt my own judgment.
Take a deep breath, slow down a few times – I give myself some quiet time to contemplate.
I feel like I really need quality, multi-dimensional information, understanding and sharing from those who have gone before (both the ugly, the beautiful, the naked and the sacred), inspiration and empowerment. Not only is the cold textbook information smelling like medical disinfectant alcohol…
I have the rest of my life left to love my child, but before that, now and in the future, I love me and I still want to continue. I want the best for my children, and I want the same for myself. I believe that the journey of motherhood does not have to be a life-or-death sacrifice. That’s never the only way.
I write these few lines as a premise for sharing about my own motherhood journey, with the desire to empower women who are also preparing to embark on this challenging spiritual journey with your truest emotions and experiences. We hope to receive sympathy and support from other women. After all, at the time of a child’s formation, what gift is more precious than the happiness and peace of a mother?
